Covid-19 Student Art Competition 2020

GENERAL INFORMATION

The Mongolian Culture and Heritage Center of Colorado is excited to announce “Covid-19 Student Art Competition 2020” a social issue focused virtual art competition open to students enrolled in grades K-12. We are invested in the welfare of our community, we seek too engage youth virtually amidst a period of quarantine to start thinking proactively and positively.

The impact of COVID-19 on our world community has been vast. We’re in uncertain times right now – economically, socially, and culturally. Our thoughts are with all of you and we hope you’re safe and healthy. We are reminded of just how critical it is to support one another during these challenging times.

The virus demonstrates that everything is connected, it knows no boundaries. We believe that through this, there is an opportunity to foster connectivity through non-physical means. In this time of physical distancing, there is an opportunity for social solidarity and internal reflection. We acknowledge the powerful, positive effect virtual and live experiences provide. All students in kindergarten through grade twelve are encouraged to participate in the Covid-19 Student Art Competition 2020. The part art and part written social message competition serves as an opportunity for students to offer critical look about Covid 19 to help envision social solutions for a positive and better world amid the Covid 19 pandemic.

All artwork entries and winning entries will be posted online on the Covid-19 Student Art Competition 2020 Online Gallery at: www.instagram.com/covid19ASC2020.

CONTEST ELIGIBILITY – WHO MAY PARTICIPATE?

Any K-12 student attending public, private or homeschool in Colorado. Only one entry per student. Supervising adults should encourage all students to write social message alongside art entries.

CONTEST DEADLINE

ALL ENTRIES ACCEPTED DIGITALLY BY EMAIL. Submit your entries by taking high quality scanned image or by taking high resolution photo then send to covidart@gmail.com by JUNE 15. This contest doest not require entries to be mailed.

DIGITAL SUBMISSION GUIDELINES:

1. Read the contest rules carefully and make sure you meet eligibility requirements.

2. Fill out Entry Form ( English (735.2KB) /  Spanish (1.1MB))
3. Make your entry according to prompt.
4. Scan high quality of image or take high quality photo of art entry.
5. Email entry image and form by the deadline to @gmail.com.

ART CONTEST RULES

  1. Art entries must be contestant’s original, hand-drawn creation and may not be traced or copied from photographs or other artists’ works. Only work that is the unique creation of the individual student should be entered into the competition. Please do not submit work which has been copied from another source. Only work that is your unique creation should be entered into competition.
  2. Art entries may be rendered in 2 dimensional form or 3 dimensional form.
  3. 2 dimensional forms may include multi-color, black and white, or single color artworks rendered on standard letter sized paper with physical size of 8.5 inches x 11 inches. 2 dimensional materials may include photography, computer generated art, ink, paints, marker, oil or dry dry pastel, watercolor, crayon, colored pencil, charcoal and graphite using any variety of art techniques.
  4. 3 dimensional forms may use mixture of materials within physical size of 8.5 inches x 11 inches x 11 inches parameters. 3 dimensional materials may include clay, cardboard, origami, paper mache, wires, fabric, plastic and wood.
  5. 2 dimensional and 3 dimensional artwork layouts can be either horizontal or vertical orientation.
  6. Digital images of entries should not include reflective glass from matting or frame. Please visit ___ to learn techniques on how to photograph your artworks.
  7. Digital images of entries should not reveal border around the image.
  8. Fill our contest social message entry form separate to artworks.
  9. No lettering, words, signatures or initials may appear on the front of artwork entries. Inclusion of such markings will result in disqualification.
  10. Art entries and social message forms will be judged as part of one entry.

SOCIAL MESSAGE

Each student is required to write a short social message using the entry form that expresses the spirit of their artwork message. Artwork social message should correspond with the art entry. The Covid-19 Student Art Competition 2020 seeks to engage youth during the Covid quarantine to offer positive and uplifting stimulus in counter response to the Covid pandemic our world is currently experiencing. The contest seeks to educate, engage and inspire youth about social conservation while in quarantine. The contest is designed to spark interest in social conservation through art and writing. Social messages should be limited to the space provided on the entry form.

The Social Message part of the contest is meant to be a tool for critical thinking expressed as a motto, saying or guiding principle expressed as a short statement that expresses students imagination, intention, and message behind their art. The writing prompt encourages students to use language arts to help express what they see, feel and think. 

Students are required to choose a contest prompt from the suggested topics below to help them develop their artwork message. Additionally, students are required to write one personalized response to one selected contest prompt using the entry form. Please make sure to annotate any quotes used from others.

CONTEST PROMPT

  • What would a world free of Covid look like?
  • What are some lessons we can learn from the Covid 19 pandemic?
  • How do you stay positive during Covid quarantine?
  • How would you make our world a better place during Covid/amid the time of Covid 19? 
  • What is a resilience practice that was taught to you by your culture, family and or ancestors that you use to ground yourself to help you stay hopeful and optimistic during times of adversity?
  • How can we learn from people in our communities who can teach us about survival
  • How do you connect with the wisdom of healing and resistance in tough times?
  • What are some benefits and positive things that have happened to you because of Covid 19?
  • What do you think are the greatest threats of Covid to the world and how do you propose we can overcome them?
  • What super powers would allow you to change the world into a better place?
  • How can you change the world?

INFORMATION FOR SUPERVISING ADULTS

Adults, please explain and discuss with your students the rules of this art competition, the criteria upon which their artwork will be judged, and the ethics of art. Their entry into the art contest can be treated as a final assessment of how your student responds to and conveys one of the contest prompts through art and writing. Entries will also be assessed on strength of social message and principles/aesthetics of visual art design.

Students should respond to the contest prompts by developing their own ideas through combination of imagination and critical thinking skills. We want them to portray their own visual social issue messages.

JUDGING

The Covid-19 Student Art Competition 2020 judging panel consists of seven members from our contest Sponsors, Colorado artists and art educators. Entries will be judged for image originality, artistic composition, theme, prompt content, creativity, emotional content, art skills and age appropriateness.

Artworks will be judged by 4 group level within their age group: K-3rd graders, 4th-6th graders, 7th-9th graders and 10th-12th graders. Each age group will have 4 placements: 1 First Place, 1 Second Place, 1 Third Place, 1 Honorable Mention. In total, there will be 16 awards among the 4 age groups: 4 First Place, 4 Second Place, 4 Third Place and 4 Honorable Mentions. All submissions will receive certificate of participation.

One student’s design will be selected from the 4 First Place winners as “Best of Show.” Entry submission date is June 15, 2020. Notification of winners will be announced on July 1, 2020. The Mongolian Culture and Heritage Center of Colorado staff will oversee all judging events.

  • Students awarded First Place in each category will receive an award certificate, $200 visa card, a one year membership to CSM / CMD, $25 gift card to Lighthouse, $75 gift card to Meininger Art Supply, media coverage, feature on the contest webpage at the Mongolian Culture and Heritage Center of Colorado website, featured on the contest gallery page at www.instagram.com/___.
  • Students awarded Second Place in each category will receive an award certificate, $100 visa card, a one year membership to CSM / CMD, $25 gift card to Lighthouse, $50 gift card to Meininger Art Supply, media coverage, feature on the contest webpage at the Mongolian Culture and Heritage Center of Colorado website, featured on the contest gallery page at www.instagram.com/___.
  • Students awarded Third Place in each category will receive an award certificate, $50 visa card, a one year membership to CSM / CMD, $25 gift card to Lighthouse, $25 gift card to Meininger Art Supply, media coverage, feature on the contest webpage at the Mongolian Culture and Heritage Center of Colorado website, featured on the contest gallery page at www.instagram.com/___.
  • Students awarded Honorable Mention in each category will receive an award certificate, $25 visa card, a one year membership to CSM / CMD, $25 gift card to Lighthouse, $10 gift card to Meininger Art Supply, media coverage, feature on the contest webpage at the Mongolian Culture and Heritage Center of Colorado website, featured on the contest gallery page at www.instagram.com/___.
  • All entries will receive a certificate of participation.
  • One Best of Show artwork will be displayed on the MCHCC, CSM and CMD websites.
